Chapter 5
The emissary of Rikketh had been in the Kingdom for a week now. No one knew exactly what was keeping him here any longer. The treaty had been rehashed and worked out to everyoneâs benefit and signed and sealed and it should have gone off in his hand to be delivered to the ruler of that distant land. Instead, it sat in his travel case in his room.
âItâs not doing anyone any good there,â King Ferdinando said to his royal bookmaker one night six days after Philimorâs arrival. âIt needs to be taken back!â
âI agree, Sire,â Cabrian replied. But no one Iâve spoken to seems to understand the reason for the delay.â
âWell, have you asked Philimor himself?â
Cabrian nodded and shrugged. âOf course. It does no good. He talks around the question and goes on and on about how he has come to enjoy some of the more singular sights here in the Kingdom.â
âSingularâ¦oh! Ha! I see now.â He sat back on his throne with a smile that was cagey and hummed a tune.
âUm, forgive me, Sire,â Cabrian ventured. âWhat exactly is it that you see?â
âThe poor boy has become entranced by what our Kingdom has to offer, for certain. I have seen him in the company of my daughters. They flock to him like bees to a flower, seeking to suck out the nectar.â His face twisted into a grimace. âAlthough I suppose that since I am talking about my own daughters that may not be the best analogy to use.â
Cabrian snickered to himself, but quietly. He knew exactly how good Mourning and Eve were at latching on to eligible young bachelors. Leeches, is the analogy he would have gone with.
âAt any rate, let him have his fun. Let my daughters have their fun.â The King of Sharimul waved a hand in the air and dreamed of even better days for the Kingdom. âWho knows? Perhaps we may walk away with this with more than just a simple treaty with Rikketh.â
âPerhaps so, Sire,â Cabrian mused. âPerhaps so.â

At that moment, up in her lonely rooms where no one would think to go for the next few hours at least, Carissa enjoyed a light meal of cheeses and fruits with Philimor. They were laughing over some simple thing one of them had said and truly neither of them could remember who had said it or what exactly they had said.
âWhy are you still here?â Carissa asked finally, putting words to the question that had nagged at her for the past few days.
She had enjoyed time in her room with the man, learned much about him and his own Kingdom and shared all she could about her own life, which was to say not much. They had enjoyed games of chess and harder games like Red Sails, they had discussed the books they liked to read, and just talked for hours. Yesterday he had even convinced her to go for a walk through the maze in the gardens come dark, the only time she was brave enough to do it because no one went into the gardens after dark.
